The UK has some great attractions and activities to entertain your family for the remainder of summer. But keeping the kids happy in the car on those long road trips can be difficult especially when you don’t want their eyes always on screens and electronic derives, car games become an essential part of any road trip.
Here’s a rundown of the best road trip car games that are easy and quick to learn and most importantly, FUN!
The Licence Plate Game
It’s a classic for a reason, you can play alone, with adults and with kids. This game is a quick and easy “go to” game when trying to entertain everyone.
How to play:
Look out for cars, caravans, trailers, trucks, lorries anything with a licence plate on the motorway and roads and find letters of the alphabet. Starting with “A” players can either take turns in working their way to “Z” or work as a team to get to the end of the alphabet.
No one wins, no one loses, everyone’s happy.
The Story Telling Game
This is one for the more creative minds, so there is an age restriction, children will have to be old enough to talk!
How to play:
The aim of the game is to create a nonsense story told in rounds. Player one starts the story with a phrase or sentence, for example “On a beach one day there was a monkey” Then player two continues the story, for example “His name was henry and he carries a yellow umbrella” Then player 3 would add a sentence “Henry uses his umbrella to pick the nose of the giant who lived in the castle” and the story keeps going and going until the game ends.
There are generally no rules for this game, anything goes, the more random, the funnier the story. It keeps everyone engaged and you will definitely get lots of laughs from this game.
I Went To The Market And I Bought…
This game can work with as many players as you can fit in your car, and the good thing is it’s different every time you play. This game however can have a “loser” if pitted against each other, an easy way around it is to work as a team not as individuals, make sure it’s all fun and games and no one gets hurt.
How to play:
The aim of the game is to generate a repetitive list as long as you possibly can following the phrase “I went to the market and I bought…” The first person starts by saying “I went to the market and I bought…” and then name an object you would buy in a market/ shop, for example “I went to the market and I bought an apple”. Then the 2nd second person would repeat what the person before them said but add another item at the end of their sentence for example “I went to the market and I bought an apple and a sausage”. Then the third person would repeat and add an item and so on and so on. The game ends when a person gets an item wrong or can’t remember the list.
A fun variation of this game is to take out the restriction of market goods and change it to different topics, such as countries, or people. To make it even more difficult get rid of all restrictions and let the list be full of nonsense and completely random objects; From Apple to your nans kitchen sink, this game is endlessly fun.
The Radio Game
This game is great fun for music lovers of all ages, by flicking through music radio stations there’s music from every generation so it’s a fair game and lots of fun. And if a song comes on that you like, just keep listening!
How to play:
Flick through radio stations in the car, the first one to say who the song is by and the title of the track, wins. It’s that simple! Keep playing by flicking through stations until another song comes on and play all over again.
Remember to keep car games light hearted and fun, especially when you’ve got hours left of your car journey. If all else fails, there’s always I Spy With My Little eye.
